"Appropriately Adaptive Re-use of Heritage Building"
Lokart is a Malaysian art & handicraft experience hub that caters for local Malaysians and tourist. It consist of art & handicraft workshops influenced by Malay and Chinese culture, boutique hotel, cafe and exhibition hall. The building has a total of 4-storey including 1-storey of extension from the existing building. All floors combined and formed into a built-up area of 1335 sq meter. The building comes in various activities to focus on wider target users. The ground floor is for public activities such as lobby, cafe and merchandise store targets office workers, tourist and locals. The first floor focuses on workshop and exhibition hall targets on locals, tourist and students. The second floor is boutique hotel rooms, where it is completely private zone. For the top floor, it is the batik workshop and painting workshop caters to the students, locals and tourist. The weaving workshop, wayang kulit workshop, chinese caligraphy workshop and painting workshop are in schedule method, whereas the batik workshop is available at anytime within the operation hours. Lokart provides residency programmes where it sponsors 1 local artist at a time of usually few weeks to provide special classes for the workshop. These artist will exhibit their new series of artwork which has been made during the residency programme period. The curators of this organisation carefully choose the artist for residency programme and organize exhibitions from time to time. The design concept of this project came from the transformation of Malaysian Batik and combine with the design style of Traditional + Modern.
